Modern Metaphor
March 23 - May 4, 2002

Modern Metaphor is a show that explores five artists’ visions of color, form, land, and life using oils, acrylics, watercolors, and unique mixed media. Featured New England artists include: Michael B. Wilson, Ellen Rich, Naava, Ingrid Scheibler, and Christine Destrempes.

The paintings in this show are far from literal. Closer observation and reveals layers of hidden memories and emotions.

Michael B. Wilson’s summarizes the rhythm of the show as well as the emotion intentions of his peers in his statement when he said that ‘Objects and situation are defined by what they are not as well as by what they are, and by their environment.

Ellen Rich’s “True Value” drawings and paintings continue to evolve from pure elements taken not only from the corner hardware store but from the cornerstone of memories and values that shape all of our lives. The continuity of Ellen’s squares and adjacencies of her colors pull together to form higher meanings and simple pleasures.

Christine Destrempes delivers explosive new abstract paintings that seek higher meanings Her oil paintings continue to reveal translucent layers of brilliant colors and quiet coolness on a scale that feels larger than life.

Ingrid Scheibler’s drawings twinkle and tease as they draw the viewer’s eyes across the deliberately tangled lines of ink and watercolor. Ingrid’s work combines watercolor and ink and combines figuration with abstraction evoking themes of music, carnival, and dance. Ingrid gestures are both playful and full of intentional seriousness.

Naava, a native of South African, employs all of her life experiences in her work. Naava’s paintings have a primitive feel that plays upon her memories of life lessons and journeys. Using a combination of media, Naava buries parts of her story beyond the surface of each painting.
