Rather than making literal pictures of things, I intend my art to be iconic in form and symbolic in meaning. The objects that appear relate to people I love, and events that I cherish. And places that I hold dear. Sometimes they are grouped artificially, sometimes naturally. More often, a single object is presented frontally and directly to the viewer. A strong light usually holds each object in focus. To produce these screen monotypes, I draw with graphite freely on an open silk screen. I then apply transparent ink over the drawing. I then transfer both drawing and ink to paper using a screen press. The result is that the graphite is locked into the fibers of the paper along with the ink. Cynthia Nartonis has mastered the art of printmaking; the elegance of her images and her brilliant use if color echo wisdom and talent. |
